Filmmakers in attendance

Directed by:  Laura Green, Anna Moot-Levin

Camp Widow is a gathering for widowed people by widowed people. Over the course of three days, attendees speak candidly about death, forge connections with others over shared experiences of loss, and find ways to navigate the tricky waters of grief. Founded by Michele Neff Hernandez, who suddenly became a widow at age 35, the camp offers a way to both recognize tremendous loss, while at the same time celebrating continued life. The film follows an ensemble of campers who are weary of platitudes about grief, and speak to one another from a place of radical honesty that is by turns heartbreaking and darkly hilarious, embracing irreverent humor as a cathartic means of self-expression.

David Schendel’s Film “Enduring Democracy” has PBS broadcast distribution! The newly edited PBS version will be showing and streaming nationwide.

Led by John Steinbeck's editor, a group of women activists protest Japanese American incarceration and resist racism in WWII California. Recently in a dusty filing cabinet in Monterey, California a local historian made the amazing discovery of a  trove of signed petitions demanding the restoration of civil rights to those same Americans. As historian Tim Thomas dug deeper into the origins of both the film and the petition drive he discovered a story that stands as a lesson for all Americans interested in preserving our democracy. . Inspired by Mollie Sumida's letter to the editor written while imprisoned in camp and impervious to threats of violence, residents banded together to get their community to sign Toni Jackson's petition pledging "The Democratic Way of Life for All." The petition drive and subsequent posting in The Monterey Herald effectively put a stop to the public efforts of several well funded fear campaigns against California Japanese American Citizens.
